Sparkling Hill Resort Proposal

A couple weeks ago we received a call from Dan.  He was planning to propose to his girlfriend of 5 years during their stay at Sparkling Hill Resort and wanted photos to document the event.  We were so excited!  There are few feminine reactions more powerful than when a woman is proposed to.  It’s a moment so real and, hopefully, so thrilling.  The guy is nervous, even if he is certain she will say yes.  Can he pull off the surprise, will she notice his racing pulse?

The weather had called for rain that morning, so we arrived early to set up on the viewing deck overlooking Okanagan Lake – umbrellas in tow.  But about 15 minutes before our session was scheduled to begin brilliant sunlight streamed through the clouds, creating a dramatic and DRY sky perfect for our photos.  When Dan and Steph walked out onto the patio, we were leaning over the rail taking scenic pictures very inconspicuously – trying our best to hide our massive cameras.  We waited…10 steps, 10 more, a few extra seconds…then turned and started snapping!  Dan dropped down on his knee and orchestrated the perfect proposal while we held back and documented the moments.  It was so touching!

We hope you enjoy this set of images as much as we do.  They were incredibly fun to create!  If you or someone you know is planning to propose definitely consider hiring a photographer to capture it.  You can segue into an engagement session directly after, like we did (see below).  There is no happier time!

The Harvest Golf Club – Okanagan Wedding

Harvest Golf Club Wedding Photo in 2015
We were so thrilled to be back at The Harvest Golf Club in August for another gorgeous wedding with Marcus and Brittany.  It was an absolutely beautiful day, with a slight breeze and the occasional lazy cloud drifting through the blue summer sky. This kept the temperature balmy yet graced us with glorious sun! It was perfect.

Brittany and Marcus got ready for their wedding at the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort in downtown Kelowna. They have amazing rooms their with sweeping views of Okanagan Lake. It’s a great spot to stay!  Here is one of our favourite pictures from that morning there.

We spent the rest of their beautiful wedding over at the Harvest, from mid day through sun down.  It was amazing.

Congratulations you two!  We love you to bits and see so many great things in your future.  May your marriage sparkle and shine just like you do Britt!

Sanctuary Gardens and Quails Gate Winery Wedding

Valerie and Steve got married on a balmy Thursday at one of the most beautiful wedding venues in Kelowna – Sanctuary Gardens!  The sun was shining with hardly a cloud in the sky, and a slight breeze played through the trees making the 34C weather completely bearable.  Jess started off with a brief shoot at the Bed and Breakfast where Val was getting ready.  We had some real fun getting creative with these photos!  Then it was off to the Ceremony where Steve waited.  When we arrived I could spot him over the hill, pacing anxiously and incredibly excited.  There was a definite buzz in the air!

The ceremony, officiated by Marjolein Lloyd, was so incredibly touching.  Close family and friends watched with teary eyes and wide smiles while Steve and Valerie pledged their eternal love to one another.   Their ceremony was followed by so much laughter and a huge round of hugs.  We walked around the gardens and grassy fields at Sanctuary Gardens for pictures with the wedding party, then headed over to Quails Gate Winery for the reception.  After dinner, the four of us snuck out again for a night shoot in the vineyard.  These photos turned out to be some of our all time favourites of the summer.  We played around with amazing lighting effects and had a blast producing original works of art under the light of the moon.

These two are more in love than many.  Their appreciation, respect and awe for each other is so inspiring.  There isn’t a doubt in our minds, or anyone else’s, that Steve and Val will be together forever and that their lives will be rich with happiness.  Best wishes to you both!

Hotel Eldorado September Wedding

Shannon and Bryce’ wedding day could best be described as a “windswept fairytale”.    The breeze started to pick up the moment we left Hotel Eldorado to travel to the Vibrant Vine Winery for first-look pictures, and it didn’t let up.  Just when we thought it was super windy, it got windier.  By the time their ceremony started at 4pm the gusts were so strong that I had to take the lens hood off my 70-200 lens because the wind was catching in it and moving my camera around! I could have nearly blown over at times.  But that didn’t stop them!  Shannon was a super trooper – braving the chilly blasts with grace and beauty.  It didn’t matter that her hair, which was held by dozens of tiny pins, was managing to come loose.  She was with the love of her life, tying the knot no matter what.

It has struck me many times how their wedding day perfectly illustrates marriage.  After 10 awesome years together, Andy and I know how intense life blows against you at times.  Plans are altered, you sometimes fall flat on your face, and the details don’t always turn out like you imagine.  The “wind” of life blows seasons of change your way and you have little control over them – but if you hold on tight life is amazing, because of the man or woman you walk beside.  They bring you strength, pick you up when you fall, and see your best even when the storms blow.  All the pretty details of your life could be laid waste, and you will still stand strong – together.  Thankfully however wind storms are usually few and far between, and life is beautiful.

We choose to photograph weddings because we believe in marriage, and we believe that love conquers all.  So we are super happy to share this set of images with you.  And we are stoked to hear all about the beautiful life that Shannon and Bryce build together (with their precious little bundle…!).

Okanagan winery wedding at CedarCreek and Delta Grand Okanagan

We met Colin and Cassy in early 2014 when they were on the hunt for a photographer.  A few emails back and forth led them to book us as and we were so excited!  In May last year they drove up from Calgary for an engagement photo session with Andy and I.  We got together 3 more times after that and became such great fiends.  They even came to our place and met our kids!  So you can imagine how much we were looking forward to their wedding day.  When Saturday July 4 rolled around there was hardly a cloud in the sky and a slight breeze was playing through the trees.  You could not have asked for a better day!

We met up with Cassy and Colin at the Delta Grand Okanagan that morning to capture some photos of their rooms, wedding details and the flurry of excitement as everyone got ready.  It was so nice that they both stayed in the same hotel so we could float back and forth while the morning unfolded.  We started off in the ladies’ suite where hair, by Colin’s friend Meghan, and makeup, by Melissa Craven, were busy underway.

While final touches to hair and makeup were being done we took a break to photograph Cassy’s amazing shoes and dress, rings, flowers by Blue Sage Farm, and other details such as the customized champagne bottle from their friends!

And then snacks arrived!  We snapped a few quick photos of this and left the ladies to enjoy their food and bevies while we met up with the guys. 2015-09-03_00012015-09-03_00092015-09-03_00082015-09-03_0007

Colin and crew took off in their limo so Andy headed over to the ceremony site with them.  Jess returned back to Cassy’s room to photograph the most exciting part of her day so far – getting the dress on!  Isn’t her flower girl Francis adorable?  She was always sneaking up to us with ideas and suggestions for photos, and they were good ones too!  We have a feeling there may be wedding photography in her bright future.

We left the Delta Grand Okanagan by limo at 2:30 and were whisked away to Cassy and Colin’s gorgeous ceremony at CedarCreek Estate Winery.  This place is unbelievable!  We adore photographing there because there is just so much space to move around, and the views are spectacular.

Day-of coordinator Laura, with English Rose Weddings, was hard at work helping the men pin on boutonnieres and making sure the day ran as smooth as silk.  When Cassy showed up in the limo everything was ready and every important person in place for a beautiful wedding ceremony overlooking Okanagan Lake.2015-09-04_00032015-09-04_00042015-09-04_00052015-09-04_00062015-09-04_0007

After the ceremony we did formal photographs with the family and wedding party.2015-09-04_00082015-09-04_0009

Then we walked over to the vineyard with Cassy and Colin, to enjoy some time away from the crowds with just the two of them amongst the vines!  2015-09-04_00102015-09-04_0011

Before leaving the winery we stopped by some super awesome wooden doors at the venue for a few pictures real quick, then everyone hopped into the limo and headed downtown Kelowna for pictures.
The rest of the day was nothing short of magical.  Everyone looked amazing, laughed a lot, and spirits soared.  The only rough part of the day was Cassy walking along the boardwalk downtown in those painful, but oh-so-worth-it heels 😉

Arriving back at the hotel for the reception it was time to let loose and give those toes some wiggle room!  There was great music by DJ Super Dave, beautiful decor by Stage Right Etc, unbelievably tasty food, and a beautiful cupcake tower and cutting cake by Sugar Sweet Cake Company.2015-09-04_00172015-09-04_00192015-09-04_0018

And let’s not forget a few photos of the other people who made this wedding amazing (wink wink) – us!  And Laura with English Rose, and Jillian with Delta Grand Okanagan.

Cassy and Colin made their grand entrance to a room full of cheering fans and boisterous clapping at 6:15.  They partied the evening away while our cameras clicked well into the dark of night.  2015-09-04_00202015-09-04_00212015-09-04_0022Bride and grooms first dance wedding photosWedding party dancing, cool DJ photolinedancing_receptiondance_photo Wedding reception table decor chairs champagne glasses candles nightdelta grand okanagan - kelowna resort and conference centre

Family Portraits

Photography by

Photography by

Andy and I value family photographs.  When we were married 10 years ago (Ack! how has it been that long already?!) our family was young.  Both sets of my grandparents were alive, my siblings 18 years of age or younger, and our future unknown.  I remember well our own wedding day and the small attention that we paid to family portraits.  We were just so excited to get married and didn’t want to waste much time posing with family in front of the camera.  Thankfully, we did get some.  I have photographs of Andy and I with my parents and  siblings, just me with my siblings, and Andy and I with just my parents.  He has the same 3 portraits for his side of the family.  I had a photograph taken with just one sister.  We did 1 photo of Andy and I with both sets of parents, with one set of my grandparents, and that is all we have!  Now when we look back at our photos we LOVE looking at these photographs.   It is so amazing to see how my sisters and brothers have changed, to view the love we shared as families, and to see my grandparents together with me in a photograph.  Life is so different now!  My mothers parent’s have both passed, and my father’s mom.  My little 1 year old sister is 12!  Those family photographs are something we hold incredibly dear.  I only wish we had so many more.

wedding family portrait of cousins by jessica and andy

When our couples get married we put strong emphasis on family images because we know how much they are going to mean in the future.  We recommend photos with the bride and every family member dear to her, and the groom with each person most important to him.  We don’t rush couple’s through this time because it is so valuable!  Andy and I also bring along professional, portable lighting to ensure that your family images have a consistent quality of light no matter where the location.  We can overpower the hot sun or compensate for a lack of light in a dark room – and your photographs will never tell.  Every family image will be as beautiful as the next.

We have developed a systematic approach to the family portrait session which permits us to work quite quick without sacrificing on quality.  We give our couples a wide variety of images, with multiple photos of the most important groupings.  We capture laughter in some and and posed gazes in others – but all of the family portraits capture LOVE.  The deep and unending love of family, despite people’s differences and the unique paths they travel.  We understand that one day you will sit back together and view these pictures – and we want you to smile, perhaps tear up or laugh, and enjoy the memory of those moments.  They mean the world.

So we encourage you to find a wedding photographer who values family portraits as much as you do or will.  You will never regret this decision!

Gellatly Nut Farm West Kelowna wedding

We had the absolute privilege of photograph a very intimate wedding in West Kelowna a couple weeks ago. Melissa and Kevin had booked us this winter for a Yacht wedding, only to have the yacht’s new owner cancel their booking last minute. They had needed to call off the wedding indefinitely until new plans could be made, and we were so sad for them! Then, about 4 weeks before their day had originally been scheduled, we received an email that they were going ahead with plans – opting instead for a simple backyard ceremony with their closest family.

The day couldn’t have been more perfect and two people in love couldn’t have been happier.  The details, the backdrop, it all paled in comparison to the vows Melissa and Kevin were making to each other: to laugh, love and live together as best friends forever.

After their touching ceremony, we left Melissa and Kevin’s family behind and drove to Gellatly Nut Farm for a couple’s portrait session.  The vibrant green trees and grass, with the most glorious light you can hope for, made for some spectacular pictures and we are SO excited to share a few with you now!

Kevin and Melissa – you two are perfect for each other and will be such amazing parents.  I am so excited for you to start your family and experience life together as husband and wife.  May you always know love, despite any hurdles life presents, and I hope that your days are filled with happiness together.  THANK YOU for hiring us to capture your wedding photographs!

We won an award!

Andy and I are thrilled to have placed 1st as Kelowna’s Best Wedding Photography Studio, 3rd in all of BC and 10th in Canada with the Wedding Industry Experts 2015 Awards! Jessica was also voted Kelowna’s most popular wedding photographer. What a fun email to receive in our inbox!

Lauren & Jamie’s Wedding Day

Lauren and Jamie are high school sweethearts who have been together for 10 years. Getting to know them over the past year since they booked us had given us high expectations for a wonderful day. They were always so genuine and positive that we couldn’t help but walk with a little extra pep in our step the morning of their wedding! From that first step into Lauren’s hotel room to the very last dance before we called it a night – every moment of this wedding was so much fun to be a part of!  Laughter and smiles literally greeted you around every corner.

We put together a little slideshow to tell the story of their day and can’t wait to show off some of our favorite moments!

Jamie and Lauren – we are so thrilled to have been your photographers!  Your wedding was so beautiful and heartfelt.  We wish you an amazing future together as you journey through the ups and downs of life with your best friend at your side.  Enjoy these photos always! We hope they take you back to the sights, emotions and moments of your uniquely perfect day.
